West Surrey Ladies Bowling League Zone A

A triples only league - I think.

Knockout comp. who knows?

Bowls England

Top Club - The ladies went out in round one.

At county level the ladies have been busy with multiple entries in various formats of the SCWBS comps.

Singles

In the first round of the 4 wood singles Margaret Baigent lost out to opposition from West Byfleet on 8 May. Carolyn Hart's Champion of Champions campaign juddered to a halt against Stephanie Elgar of Windlesham on 11 May. Barbara Sutton has a bye to round 2 of the Officers singles and plays her first match against opposition from Mytchett on 28 May.

Pairs

Three of our pairs teams were in round 1 action on Friday 5 May and Saturday 6 May. Margaret

Baigent & Sue Bickley, and Barbara Sutton & Wendy Sheldon won through to round 2 having overcome opponents from Egham and Bourne respectively. Unfortunately the challenge of Nina Challens & Carolyn Hart was short lived going out to another pair from Egham. Round 2 was played on Friday 12 May when Wendy and Barbara went out to a pair at Camberley. Margaret and Sue recorded a win against a pair from Milford on 12 May but came to the end of the road in the 3rd round against a Bourne pair on 19th May.

Triples

Margaret Baigent, Sue Bickley and Wendy Sheldon played their way into round 3 against a Westfield trio on 24 May. Their round 3 match was against a team from Egham at Egham on 31 May. It turned out to be a most exciting match with Burpham pushing Egham to a 19th end and losing by just one to the Egham skip's very last ball. Shame but this close call obviously shook the Egham ladies who were severely tested, in more ways than one, by this close call apparently. Large glasses of wine all round ladies and hands up who prefers to be in a friendly club!

Barbara, Linda, and Nina beat Tongham at home 21 - 9 - the opposition retired after 16 ends!!!!!! (picture). Their next round was a 3rd round ties against a trio from Milford and that proved to be the end of the road for this year.

Having benefited from a bye in the first round, Maureen Thomas, Carolyn Hart, and Angela Potter played their first match against a team from Stoke Park, also on the 24 May, but lost by just one.

Fours

On 25 May Margaret Baigent, Wendy Sheldon, Sue Bickley and Barbara Sutton opened - and closed - their account against Tongham at Burpham. Nina Challens, Carolyn Hart, Linda Macbeth and Shelagh Spencer played their first match against Mytchett at the same time. But unfortunately lost.

In the Over 55 Fours Margaret Baigent, Carolyn Hart, Sue Bickely and Nina Challens played a team at Warlingham Park on 20 May, and lost..... by just one unfortunately. In the same competition Maureen Thomas, Linda Macbeth, Angela Potter and Pat Knight were due to play their first match on 3 June but couldn't field a team.

Details of all of these fixtures, and their results can be found at the link above.

West Surrey Ladies Bowling League Zone A - Knockout competitions

Fixtures and results of the league games are posted under Ladies Fixtures on this site. But their position in the league remains a mystery!

This league also runs knockout competitions for singles, pairs and triples. Burpham ladies take part in these competitions but my efforts to obtain information about draws, other teams, playing schedules, or results have been almost entirely unsuccessful. I understand two of of our triples teams played each other recently but I don't know what round that was nor how far the successful team has now progressed. It transpires that they went on to play West End on 26 July. It was nip and tuck for most of the game but West End managed to take the game at the last knockings. So that's it for these knockouts for another year. Well done ladies.

Tony Allcock Trophy

We sent two mixed rinks teams over to Knaphill to compete in this on Saturday 27 May. We lost apparently but more interesting was that one of our team was disqualified before the start ....... for being too young!! Now that doesn't happen very often in the world of bowls!!
