Exploring the Dorset Bowls Resort: A January 2025 break

Writer's picture: Geoff SheldonGeoff Sheldon

Following a highly enjoyable few days at this resort a year ago 19 of us made the trip this year from 13 to 17 January.

We were joined there by some familiar faces from Merrow and Castle Green clubs, and a large contingent from Clacton, some of whom were familiar from last year.

Visiting Dorset in January offers a break in the peaceful landscapes and calm surroundings. The Dorset Bowls resort invites you to enjoy the fun of bowling and soak in the beauty of nature.

Accommodation and Amenities

The resort has accommodation in chalets and hotel rooms. We were in comfortable twin rooms in the hotel.

There are numerous amenities, including a 27 hole golf course, a fitness centre equipped with a range of gear for those wanting to stay active, and a wellness spa. All free for residents.

We were provided with breakfast and dinner. The catering was excellent and evening entertainment was laid on.

The Bowling

The bowling was an organised competition in rinks format so we had 4 teams. We played a league format in two leagues over two days. The top two teams from each league went into the final on the last day, and the runners-up played each other for 3rd and 4th places. One of our teams Alan and Glenda Mogg and Vince and Barbara Hopkinson, fought their way to the final but came second. Nevertheless a brilliant effort especially considering the Clacton is a year-round indoor club.

Exploring the Surrounding Area

While bowling was the significant part of our stay, exploring the beautiful landscapes around the resort was a highlight as well. Dorset is known for its charming villages and stunning cliffs, so some of us ventured to visit the surrounding area, such as Corfe Castle, Dorchester and Poole. All within an easy drive of the resort.

Final Thoughts

Dorset Bowls Resort, with its unique blend of leisure, nature, and community, offers a perfect escape for anyone seeking peace and connection. We enjoyed our stay and our fellow bowlers were very friendly. The accommodation was comfortable and the catering excellent.
